There are many book collectors who never read the books they buy to keep them in pristine condition. However, most people purchase books to read and enjoy. No matter what your reason for purchasing a book, you should take certain steps to preserve your library.

Don’t Write In Your Books

Some people make notes in margins, highlight, or write in their books. Ink can permanently damage your book and should be avoided if possible. If you simply can’t resist writing in a book, then use a pencil so it can be erased at a later date.

Keep Food and Drinks Away From Your Books

It is very tempting to grab a snack and beverage and sit down and read a good book. However food or drinks can greatly damage a book and ruin it forever. If you have to have a snack or drink while reading your book, make sure your fingers are clean and dry while reading.

Make sure any table you set your book down on is dry and free from crumbs or stickiness.

Handle With Care

Anytime you are reading your book don’t dog-ear the pages, use a bookmark and try to avoid breaking the binding. Also, try to avoid placing the book face-down while it is open, this can break the binding and damage the spine of the book. You may also want to invest in a book cover to keep the dust jacket of your book in great condition.

When you shelve your books always store them standing up, not laying down or stacked on each other. This can damage the dust jackets. When you store your books make sure they have enough room so the top of the dust jacket does not scrape against the top of the shelf. Store your books out of direct sunlight and in a clean and dry environment.

If you have to store your books in a basement or garage, put them in an airtight plastic bin to protect them from bugs, moisture and other damage. Don’t forget to put them in the bins standing up, not stacked on each other!

Creating Book Storage Libraries in Your Home

Often homeowners have more books than they have room for. Not everyone has a room they can dedicate solely to a book library. No matter the space you have, it’s possible to create small book libraries throughout your home. This will also help you to be able to access the books you need more easily. Following are some tips for creating book storage libraries in your home.

Sorting Your Books

The first step in creating a home library is to sort through your books. Think carefully about the books you truly like and will use. Give away any you feel you won’t even open. You may be able to find an organization that would appreciate receiving free books.

Categorizing

When you’ve decided which books are keepers, sort them into categories. For example, put cookbooks or anything related to the kitchen in one pile. Put reference books in another and books for leisure reading in yet another pile. By putting your books in categories, you’ll be able to store them in the room where you will use them most.

Creating a Library by Room

Once you’ve categorized your books, start with one category. For example, start with books related to the kitchen. Find a place in your kitchen such as an empty cabinet or even an area for a book shelf. If you don’t have a lot of room in your kitchen, nor any empty cabinets, you may want to invest in a wall shelf. These can also be made rather easily.

A child’s room can be fun to create a book library. You can use a colorful book shelf or even stack plastic milk crates. Use your imagination and what you already have on hand. Children will love having their own library of books in their room. It will help encourage them to read.

For reference books or leisure reading books, you could create a space in your living room, a family room or even a hallway. Where you put the books will depend on your personal usage of them. A family room might be ideal for a leisure reading library.

The Arrangement

Once you have figured out which books will go in each room, arrange books by how you will use them. You can arrange alphabetically or by type. For example, you might want to categorize books for leisure reading by genre such as mystery, romance, western, etc. Recipes books can be arranged by type such as desserts, main meals or ones you use most frequently.

Designing the Look

When arranging your books, you don’t have to line them all up vertically. You can mix and match – have some standing vertically and some laying horizontially. You can add visual appeal by placing decorative items, framed pictures, etc. in between the books.

More Tips

* You can add some fun to your library by making colorful labels for your book shelves.

* Don’t allow books to be exposed to excessive sunlight or heat

* Don’t store books in a room with high humidity or excessive temperature changes

* Books need air flow. Don’t push them all the way to the back of the shelf. Don’t squeeze them too tightly together.

How To Save Money By Visiting Your LIbrary

Have your visited your local library lately? Library visits and borrow rates have been climbing over the past six months due to the economic down turn. There is so much more to your library than just borrowing books. Libraries let you borrow books and magazines. But did you know you can also borrow DVD’s? Save the expense of rental fee’s and borrow a few DVD’s each week.

Trying to cut back on spending then consider giving up your internet service and using the internet for free at the library. For some of us that sounds impossible…WHAT, live without my internet!! But to someone who may have suffered a job loss or cut in pay this can be a way to save over a month. Plan a couple visits each week to check emails and surf for a little while. You will want to visit your library to see what times seems to be easier to grab a free computer.

Another great freebie the library offers is many classes for your kids! Check with your local library to see what they offer. Ours has many programs for toddlers and preschoolers as well as a great summer reading program for school age children. There are so many programs available at your local libraries and you will have built in some free entertainment as well as a way to connect with other parents! So next time you visit your library be sure to ask about the programs they offer and a list of class dates and times!

Taking Notes From The Best Marijuana Books

If not for my research paper, which, according to my professor will be the gauge for passing me or not, I wouldn’t have discovered the good effects of reading medical marijuana books. I was raised in a very conservative home where discussions about drugs and sex are absolutely taboo. Either face the wall for two hours or no TV for a week is the punishment that awaits anybody found talking about marijuana legalization books.

Fortunately, I’m one of those biology students close to acquiring a failing mark and the only thing that could save me is a term paper about medicinal plants. At first I was hesitant to do it. Ask me about Wii games and I can give you a rundown with the main characters of each game included… but medicinal plants?

My professor said she has to approve everybody’s topics first before we can proceed to the nitty-gritty step of our research work. Two days after we were told of the research project, everybody arrived in class prepared with his subject proposal – all except me.

Somebody proposed the healing secrets of oregano, another presented aloe vera, one of them even mentioned Popeye’s spinach. As ideas on medicinal plants flooded the classroom, I felt myself drowning in fear as I’m not prepared.

When it was my turn to speak I still didn’t know what to say but I had to think of something lest suffer the consequences, so I blurted medical effects of marijuana. I thought I would be punished for saying that but surprisingly, my professor said it was a brilliant choice of a subject. I was commended for a shot in the dark! Still, I didn’t think writing about marijuana would be a good idea since I have zero knowledge about it. I can just change my topic afterwards I thought to myself. Before leaving the classroom, however, my professor told me to look for the best marijuana books online.

Obviously stuck on marijuana writing, I’m left with no choice but to take this research task seriously. After classes, I headed straight home to search online for the marijuana books my teacher was talking about. It didn’t take long for me to successfully stumble on very comprehensive books on growing marijuana and its medicinal effects. It appears the universe is siding with me and I’ll be over with this project in no time. Little did I know that reading about marijuana’s effects will change my viewpoint towards cannabis.

I’m only required to write a 30-page term paper but I’ve managed to produce 75 and yet it seems there’s still so much to write about. Is this marijuana addiction already?

A slim little volume with a scary title that really speaks to the heart of the matter of what it is like to be an artist working in today’s world.  Written by two working visual artists, it grapples with what artists deal with psychologically when they sit down at their easels or typewriters.  A world where it has been pronounced more than once that, “art is dead,” where there is no longer very much by way of external award offered to those who are true to their own voice.  An underground artist’s classic and must read for anybody who has ever doubted, or given up at any point.

The Courage to Create, by Rollo May

Wise, hopeful—sort of the Barack Obama of humanistic psychologists—Rollo May never fails to impress with ideas that will truly expand your ideas about what it is to be human and creative.  A taste:  “Commitment is healthiest when it is not without doubt, but in spite of doubt,” and “America is among the most violent of the so-called civilized nations….  An important cause of this is the influence of that frontier brutality of which we are heirs.  We need a new find of physical courage that will neither run rampant in violence nor require our assertion of ego-centric power over other people.”  He makes the argument that imagination and creativity are THE reasons for our existence, rather than just ‘niceties,’ and something less important to mainstream life.  Not enough good things can be said about this book.

The Artist’s Way Workbook, by Julia Cameron

A guided tour through getting your artistic mojo back, basically, with designated tasks and check-in exercises that offer an actual program that you give yourself.   Cameron lauds the idea of journal writing, personal exploration, and expansion of your mental horizons to unblock and become open to your own creativity.  The best thing about it is that is amazingly non-judgmental in the way it is written, and the exercises are almost childlike in conception, which makes it all the more approachable and doable.

How to Read Books Online

If you know where to look, you can find a wide variety of ways to read books online for free without breaking or bending any laws– even recent bestsellers!

Reading books online is a great way to catch up on your reading, as long as you know where to look. Many books are available on the internet in a variety of formats. There are free (open source) programs available to get your reading material changed into a format you can use, if it happens to end up posted in a format you can’t read.

How Ebooks Work– Software, Formats, and DRM You will find books for sale and for free in a wide variety of formats online. If you are looking for some free reading material, knowing what to do with the books you find is an important step toward reading your book. Here are many common ways you will find books available online, so you know what you’re looking at when you find it.

Webpages/HTML files (ebook.html/ebook.htm)

Many free books come as simple webpages, formatted with basic HTML. To save an e-book formatted as HTML, you can right click and “save as” or use the file menu to “save page as” whatever comes up on the autocomplete. Most books to read online are presented in HTML, but the format will work from your web browser just as well offline as it will when you’re connected.

Plain Text Books (ebook.txt)

Some of the places you go to download free books online will offer you plain text files. When you click on the link, it will load right into your browser window, probably with a rather old looking font and a lack of complex formatting. To save a text ebook, right click on the link that takes you to the book and select “save as…” You can save it under whatever name it comes up under, and read it with any basic text editor you have, probably even notepad.

Popular E-book Specific Formats That Might Have DRM

Adobe EPUB (ebook.epub). This format is growing in popularity among some ebook stores and many libraries. If you find a free DRM’d EPUB book you’d like to read, you can download software from Adobe’s website to access your book. Lots of reader software and hardware supports non DRM’d EPUB files, making them easy to access. Warning: I’ve heard many of the ebooks available at Barnes and Noble’s new ebook store for the Nook are using a format called “EPUB” that won’t work with anything other than a Nook.

Amazon Kindle Format (ebook.azw/ebook.mobi). If you find one of these you’d like to read that is available for free, you can download a program on Amazon’s website to allow it to show on your computer if you don’t have a Kindle. The Kindle’s DRM format (AZW) is just like the mobipocket format with a few small changes. Many ebook files can be easily converted to MOBI to use with a Kindle.

While there are many ebooks sold in ereader format in various stores, there aren’t many dedicated e-book readers that support ereader format because Palm requires the devices that support ereader to only support ereader DRM.

Adobe PDF (ebook.pdf). PDF files are usually saved as images, unfortunately, which makes them a little bit difficult to manage or convert if you don’t have a good setup for reading PDFs. Adobe Digital Editions (linked above) will work for managing DRM’d PDF files.
